Amber Ledford will be the guest chef at the Longhouse Restaurant’s Guest Chef Night fundraiser on Thursday, January 31, 2008.
The money raised will benefit the Murphy Middle School Beta Club with $2 per plate going to the club.
There also will be a silent auction table.

Sandra Clutton of Coldwell Banker Ervin and Associates has returned from Knoxville, Tennessee, where she completed a highly specialized course in residential real estate buyer sales strategies conducted by the Council of Residential Specialists of the National Association of Realtors.
This course is one in a series of professional education sequences required to qualify for the coveted Certified Residential Specialist designation.
“The growing importance of negotiation as well as sales strategies in today’s residential real estate market were addressed by the instructor in this course,” Clutton said. “The many and varied needs of the buyer, who is making what is probably the largest single purchase of a lifetime, is dealt with in this advanced course.”
The segments of the course included counseling techniques, understanding human behavior, and professional knowledge of the required steps in the real estate sales sequence.
The Council of Residential Specialist courses are presented throughout the United States in Affiliation with the National Association of Realtors as part of its ongoing program of promoting the professionalism of the residential sales associate.

Ann Castle, assistant vice president of Appalachian Community Bank, recently donated $500 to Kenny Garland, principal of Hiwassee Dam High School.
This donation will be used to offset the cost of a new display case located in the high school gym, which will promote student achievement, college awareness, and the athletic accomplishments of the school’s students.

Robin Kolar, owner of Designer’s Alley, has been certified as a state instructor of cosmetology.
Kolar also earned an associate’s degree in science with a 4.0 grade point average. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa with honors and was elected to Who’s Who Among Students in America’s Junior Colleges.
She has been appointed to teach a course for nail technicians this fall at Tri-County Community College in the Peachtree community of Cherokee County, NC. The classes will meet from 5:00 pm until 10:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Aside from operating a successful beauty salon and spa, Kolar also finds time to be an educator for Pravana Corp., instructing other salon owners and cosmetologists.
Her salon, on US 64 West, employs six staff cosmetologists and a massage therapist.

According to a report in the May 30, 2007, edition of the Cherokee Scout submitted by Brittany McKinnon, the Student Government Association of Murphy High School has successfully raised the funds needed to purchase a large LED sign.
The sign costs about $30,000, and area businesses donated enough money to make the purchase possible.
The following businesses each donated $5,000 for the cause: Ace Hardware of Murphy and Andrews, Lewis D. Jones Insurance, Western Carolina Real Estate Co Inc, United Community Bank, and Badcock Home Furnishings Center.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission will offer a hunter safety course from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Monday through Wednesday, March 6-8, 2006, at the Murphy Public Library.
Students must attend all three nights to become hunter safety certified.
The course is free and there is no minimum age limit to attend or pre-registration.
